Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development

At Priestnall School, our mission statement, ‘Educating for Life’ epitomises our attitude and approach to the importance of the development of all aspects of SMSC. We believe in an holistic, educational experience and a curriculum that ensures students are well prepared for life and work in a diverse society. Our aim is to provide an education where students have opportunities to explore, develop their own values, whilst recognising and appreciating differing views and opinions. We believe that high standards of behaviour, a positive attitude towards all members of our school community, an understanding of the diversity and richness of other cultures arethe abilities, skills and outlooks that we nurture, encourage and develop through the curriculum, assemblies and extra-curricular opportunities.

All curriculum areas have a contribution to a student’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Curriculum areas seek to use illustrations and choose examples from a wide range of cultural contexts as possible. This will be evident in teacher planning and resources. All adults will model and endorse socially responsible behaviour. Students should learn to distinguish between right and wrong in as far as their actions affect others.

Through the vehicle of SMSC, Priestnall School promotes the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Actively promoting these values means challenging opinions or behaviours in school that are contrary to fundamental British values. The Teachers’ Standards expect teachers to uphold public trust in the profession and maintain high standards of ethics and behaviour within and outside school. This includes upholding fundamental British values.
